What is ASCVD Risk Score?

The ASCVD (Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease) risk score estimates your 10-year risk of having a heart attack or stroke. It's based on the Pooled Cohort Equations developed by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association.

ASCVD Risk Categories:

• Low Risk (< 5%): Low 10-year risk. Maintain healthy lifestyle.
• Borderline Risk (5% - 7.5%): Consider lifestyle changes and discuss with doctor.
• Intermediate Risk (7.5% - 20%): Moderate risk. Lifestyle changes and possibly medication.
• High Risk (> 20%): High risk. Strongly consider medication and aggressive lifestyle changes.

Risk Factors Included:

• Age: Risk increases with age
• Gender: Men have higher risk than women
• Race: African Americans have higher risk
• Total Cholesterol: Higher levels increase risk
• HDL Cholesterol: Lower levels increase risk
• Blood Pressure: Higher levels increase risk
• Diabetes: Significantly increases risk
• Smoking: Significantly increases risk

Heart Health Tips:

• Maintain a healthy weight (BMI 18.5-24.9)
• Eat a heart-healthy diet (Mediterranean diet, less salt)
• Exercise at least 30 minutes daily, 5 days a week
• Don't smoke and avoid secondhand smoke
• Manage stress through yoga, meditation, or hobbies
• Get regular blood pressure and cholesterol checkups
