What is a TFT?
Thyroid Function Tests (TFTs) are blood tests that measure levels of thyroid hormones and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) to assess how well your thyroid gland is working.
Purpose of the Test
- Diagnose thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
- Monitor effectiveness of thyroid treatments
- Screen for thyroid issues during pregnancy
- Investigate symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, or irregular heartbeat
Preparation
- Usually no fasting is required.
- Inform your doctor about medications, especially thyroid medicine or steroids.
- Try to schedule the test in the morning for consistent results.
Procedure
- A small blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm.
- The procedure takes only a few minutes.
- Results are usually ready within 24–48 hours.
Parameters Measured
- TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): High in hypothyroidism, low in hyperthyroidism.
- Free T4 (Thyroxine): Main hormone produced by the thyroid.
- Free T3 (Triiodothyronine): Active thyroid hormone controlling metabolism.
- Anti-thyroid antibodies: Checked if autoimmune thyroid disease is suspected.
Risks
- Mild discomfort or bruising at puncture site
- Rarely, infection or dizziness
FAQs
- Can diet affect TFT results? Generally no, but severe illness or certain supplements can influence results.
- How often should TFT be done? As advised by your doctor, often yearly for chronic thyroid patients.
