Naphazoline (0.05% w/v) + Phenylephrine (0.012% w/v) + Carboxymethylcellulose (0.5% w/v)

🩺 Quick Overview

A fixed-dose ophthalmic decongestant and lubricant solution combining two sympathomimetic alpha-adrenergic agonists (Naphazoline and Phenylephrine) for rapid vasoconstriction and relief of conjunctival hyperemia, along with Carboxymethylcellulose, a demulcent and ocular lubricant, to soothe and protect the ocular surface. Primarily used for symptomatic relief of redness and irritation associated with minor eye conditions.

Medical Uses

  • Symptomatic relief of redness and minor irritation due to: Allergic conjunctivitis
  • Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis
  • Minor eye irritation due to smoke, dust, or swimming

Side Effects

  • Transient stinging or burning upon instillation
  • Mild pupillary dilation (mydriasis)
  • Blurred vision temporarily
  • Headache

💊 Dosage & Administration

Adult Dosage: Instill 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours as needed for relief. Do not exceed 4 doses (instillations) in 24 hours.

Instructions: 1. Wash hands before use. 2. Tilt head back. 3. Gently pull lower eyelid down to form a pouch. 4. Instill the prescribed number of drops into the pouch without touching the dropper tip to eye, fingers, or any surface. 5. Close eyes gently for 1-2 minutes. Apply gentle pressure with finger at the inner corner of the eye (nasolacrimal occlusion) for about 1 minute to minimize systemic absorption. 6. Do not blink excessively. 7. Replace cap tightly after use. Wait at least 5 minutes before instilling any other eye medication.

Mechanism of Action

Naphazoline and Phenylephrine are direct-acting sympathomimetic amines that stimulate alpha-1 adrenergic receptors on the conjunctival vasculature. This activation leads to smooth muscle contraction (vasoconstriction), reducing blood flow and edema, thereby rapidly whitening the eye (decongestion). Carboxymethylcellulose is a water-soluble polymer that acts as a demulcent, lubricating and protecting the ocular surface by forming a hydrated gel layer, which stabilizes the tear film and relieves dryness and irritation.
