Overview

A fixed-dose combination oral solution containing magnesium citrate and potassium citrate. It is primarily used as a urinary alkalinizing agent and a source of essential electrolytes. Magnesium citrate provides magnesium, a cofactor for over 300 enzymatic reactions, while potassium citrate provides potassium and acts as a systemic and urinary alkalinizer. This combination is particularly relevant in the Indian context for managing conditions like hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis, renal tubular acidosis, and hypokalemia with metabolic acidosis, often seen in chronic diarrheal states.

The combination exerts a dual action: 1) **Urinary & Systemic Alkalinization**: The citrate anion is absorbed and metabolized in the liver and renal cortical cells to bicarbonate (HCO3-). This increases the plasma bicarbonate buffer, correcting metabolic acidosis. The kidneys excrete the excess alkali, raising urinary pH and increasing urinary citrate excretion. 2) **Electrolyte Replenishment**: Provides bioavailable magnesium and potassium ions to correct deficiencies.
