A fixed-dose combination (FDC) syrup for symptomatic relief of cough and common cold. It contains an antitussive (Dextromethorphan), an expectorant (Guaifenesin), a decongestant (Phenylephrine), and a first-generation sedating antihistamine (Chlorpheniramine). This combination is widely used in India for managing productive and non-productive cough with associated nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and sneezing. The FDC is intended for short-term use.
This combination acts synergistically on multiple pathways of the cough reflex and cold symptoms. Dextromethorphan suppresses the cough center in the medulla. Guaifenesin increases respiratory tract fluid secretions and reduces mucus viscosity. Phenylephrine causes vasoconstriction in nasal mucosa, reducing edema and congestion. Chlorpheniramine competitively antagonizes histamine at H1 receptors, reducing sneezing, rhinorrhea, and itching.
