Mfr: Alkem Laboratories Ltd. | Form: Tablets

📋 Clinical Overview

A fixed-dose combination supplement containing Taurine, a conditionally essential amino acid, and Acetylcysteine, a mucolytic agent and precursor to glutathione. This combination is primarily used in India as a hepatoprotective and antioxidant supplement, often for managing liver conditions, supporting detoxification, and providing antioxidant support in various metabolic and inflammatory states.

💊 Dosage & Administration

Adult: One tablet/capsule twice daily, or as directed by the physician. Typically taken after meals.

Note: Administer orally with a full glass of water, preferably after meals to minimize gastric upset. Do not crush or chew sustained-release formulations if any. For standard tablets/capsules, swallow whole.

⚠️ Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Taurine, Acetylcysteine, or any component of the formulation
  • Patients with active peptic ulcer disease (Acetylcysteine can cause gastric irritation)

🔬 Mechanism of Action

The combination exerts synergistic hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects. Acetylcysteine serves as a precursor to L-cysteine, which is rate-limiting for the synthesis of glutathione, the body's primary intracellular antioxidant. It also acts as a direct antioxidant and mucolytic by breaking disulfide bonds in mucus. Taurine stabilizes cell membranes, regulates calcium homeostasis, acts as an osmoregulator, and has direct antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Together, they combat oxidative stress, support Phase II liver detoxification, and protect hepatocytes from injury.

🤕 Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Epigastric discomfort/pain
  • Diarrhea or loose stools
