📋 Clinical Overview

Carbazochrome is a hemostatic agent, a derivative of adrenochrome, used primarily to reduce capillary permeability and fragility. It acts as a systemic capillary stabilizer, promoting hemostasis by strengthening the vascular endothelium and promoting platelet aggregation at the site of injury. In the Indian market, it is widely used in various clinical settings for the management and prophylaxis of bleeding, particularly in surgical and trauma cases.

💊 Dosage & Administration

Adult: 1 ampoule (2ml) intramuscularly, once or twice daily. In surgical settings, often administered pre-operatively and/or post-operatively for 2-3 days.

Note: For intramuscular use only. Administer by deep IM injection into a large muscle mass (e.g., gluteal region). Do not administer intravenously. The solution is typically a clear, reddish-brown color. Inspect for particulate matter or discoloration before use.

⚠️ Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Carbazochrome or any component of the injection.

🔬 Mechanism of Action

Carbazochrome is believed to reduce capillary permeability and increase capillary resistance. It stabilizes the capillary wall by interacting with the endothelial lining, potentially by promoting the polymerization of mucopolysaccharides in the capillary wall. This action reduces the leakage of blood components from the vasculature. It may also have a mild pro-aggregatory effect on platelets, aiding in the formation of a primary hemostatic plug.

🤕 Side Effects

  • Pain, redness, or induration at the injection site

🤰 Special Populations

Pregnancy: Category C: Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted. Use only if clearly needed and potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Commonly used in India for postpartum hemorrhage.

Driving: Unlikely to affect driving ability. However, if dizziness or headache occurs as a side effect, caution is advised.
