Simethicone is an anti-flatulent/anti-foaming agent used for the symptomatic relief of bloating, abdominal distension, and discomfort caused by excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract. It is a physiologically inert substance that acts locally within the gut lumen without being systemically absorbed. It is considered extremely safe and is widely available over-the-counter in India.
Adult: 40-80 mg after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times daily. For 40mg strength: 1-2 tablets/capsules up to 4 times a day.
Note: Chewable tablets should be chewed thoroughly. Capsules/tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Best taken after meals and at bedtime. Can be taken as needed for symptoms.
Simethicone reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles trapped in the gastrointestinal mucoid foam (a mixture of gas, mucus, and digestive juices). This causes the small, trapped bubbles to coalesce into larger bubbles, which are more easily expelled from the body via belching or passing flatus. It does not reduce gas production but facilitates its elimination.
Pregnancy: Category C (US FDA). Considered safe as it is not absorbed. Widely used during pregnancy for gas-related discomfort. Consult physician.
Driving: No effect. Does not cause drowsiness.
