ℹ️ Why is it prescribed?
Pegasis (Note: This is Peginterferon alfa-2a, a different molecule) contains Pegylated Interferon Alpha 2B (50mcg). It is primarily used for:
- Chronic Hepatitis C (Genotype 1-6) in combination with Ribavirin and/or Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs) as per guidelines
- Chronic Hepatitis B (HBeAg positive or negative) with compensated liver disease and evidence of viral replication
⚠️ Important Safety Information
Side Effects
- Influenza-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache, myalgia, arthralgia - often managed with pre-dose paracetamol)
- Fatigue, asthenia
- Injection site reactions (erythema, pain, swelling)
- Anorexia, nausea
- Alopecia (reversible)
- Mild psychiatric symptoms (irritability, insomnia)
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to interferon alpha-2b, polyethylene glycol (PEG), or any component
- Autoimmune hepatitis or history of severe autoimmune disease
- Decompensated liver disease (Child-Pugh Class B & C) prior to or during treatment
- Severe pre-existing psychiatric conditions (e.g., severe depression, suicidal ideation, psychosis)
- Concurrent use with Telbivudine (risk of severe peripheral neuropathy)
