Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan polysaccharide, a key component of the extracellular matrix in connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. In its high molecular weight (HMW) form (typically 1-2 million Daltons for oral supplements), it acts as a viscoelastic lubricant and humectant. The 60mg oral dose is primarily used as a nutraceutical supplement for joint and skin health. It is not a drug but a medical food/supplement, functioning by replenishing endogenous HA pools degraded due to aging, inflammation, or mechanical stress.
Adult: 60mg to 200mg once daily. A common regimen is 60mg once or twice daily, taken with meals.
Note: Take orally with a full glass of water, preferably with a meal to improve tolerance and potentially enhance absorption of metabolites. Capsules/tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed.
Oral HA supplementation provides exogenous substrate to support the body's endogenous HA synthesis. While minimally absorbed intact, its bacterial metabolites and absorbed fragments are believed to: 1) Stimulate chondrocytes and synoviocytes to produce more endogenous HA and extracellular matrix components. 2) Exert anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing TNF-α, IL-1β, PGE2, and MMP expression. 3) Scavenge free radicals, providing antioxidant protection to joint tissues. 4) Improve skin hydration by increasing dermal HA content and promoting collagen synthesis.
Pregnancy: Category N (Not classified). Animal reproduction studies are insufficient. Use only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Generally avoided due to lack of data.
Driving: No effect on ability to drive or operate machinery.
| Anticoagulants/Antiplatelets (Warfarin, Clopidogrel, Aspirin) | Theoretical risk of increased bleeding due to mild anti-inflammatory effects; clinical significance unknown. | Moderate |
| Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, Diclofenac) | Potential additive therapeutic effect for pain relief in osteoarthritis. No adverse pharmacokinetic interaction known. | Minor |
