Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring, non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan polymer composed of repeating disaccharide units of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. In its pharmaceutical form, typically as sodium hyaluronate, it acts as a viscoelastic lubricant, shock absorber, and space-filling agent. The 20mg oral formulation is widely used in India as a nutraceutical/supplement for joint health, skin hydration, and ocular surface lubrication. It is not a drug but a medical device/nutraceutical, and its efficacy is supported by clinical data for symptom relief in osteoarthritis.
Adult: Oral: 20mg to 200mg once daily. The common 20mg dose is typically taken once daily, often in combination with other supplements like Glucosamine and Chondroitin.
Note: Take orally with a full glass of water, preferably with or after meals to improve tolerance. Consistency is key for cumulative benefits. Use for at least 2-3 months to assess efficacy for joint health.
HA exerts multiple mechanisms: 1) **Physical/Viscosupplementation**: In joints, it restores the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid, improving lubrication and shock absorption. 2) **Anti-inflammatory**: HA fragments can modulate immune responses, suppressing prostaglandin E2, IL-1β, TNF-α, and MMP production. 3) **Anabolic/Chondroprotective**: Stimulates chondrocyte proliferation, enhances endogenous HA synthesis, and protects cartilage from degradation. 4) **Analgesic**: Coats nerve endings, providing a pain-dampening effect. 5) **Skin/Ocular Hydration**: Binds up to 1000 times its weight in water, maintaining tissue hydration and turgor.
Pregnancy: Category N (Not classified). Animal reproduction studies are insufficient. Use only if clearly needed. Generally avoided due to lack of data.
Driving: No effect on ability to drive or operate machinery.
| Warfarin/Anticoagulants | Theoretical risk of increased bleeding due to potential antiplatelet effects of HA fragments, but not clinically significant with oral HA. Monitor for injectable forms. | Minor |
| Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) | Potential additive analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. No harmful interaction reported. | Minor |
