Dimethicone (40mg) is a clinically established anti-foaming and anti-flatulent agent, widely used in the Indian market for the symptomatic relief of gas-related abdominal discomfort. It is an organosilicon polymer (polydimethylsiloxane) that acts physically to reduce surface tension of gas bubbles, facilitating their coalescence and expulsion. It is not absorbed systemically, making it exceptionally safe with minimal side effects.
Adult: 40mg to 120mg, taken after meals and at bedtime as needed. Typically, 40mg tablet/capsule can be taken 3-4 times daily.
Note: Tablets/Capsules: Swallow whole with a glass of water, preferably after meals. Chewable tablets: Chew thoroughly before swallowing. Suspension/Drops: Shake well before use. Measure dose with provided measuring cup/dropper. Can be taken directly or mixed with a small amount of water.
Dimethicone is a surfactant with low surface tension. It acts by reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles (foam) entrapped in gastrointestinal mucus and digestive contents. This causes the small, trapped bubbles to coalesce into larger bubbles, which are more easily expelled from the body via belching or passing flatus. It does not reduce gas production but aids in its physical removal.
Pregnancy: Category C (US FDA). However, considered safe due to lack of systemic absorption. Widely used in pregnancy for gas and bloating in India. Consult physician.
Driving: No effect. Does not cause drowsiness.
