Acigyl-MPS Suspension

Magaldrate (400mg/5ml) + Simethicone (60mg/5ml)
Price: ₹75 - ₹110 for 170 ml bottle
Mfr: Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd | Form: Oral Suspension

📋 Clinical Overview

A co-formulated oral suspension combining Magaldrate, a balanced co-precipitate of aluminum and magnesium hydroxides (hydrotalcite), and Simethicone, an anti-foaming agent. Magaldrate acts as a potent, rapid-acting antacid with mucosal protective properties, while Simethicone reduces gas-related discomfort by lowering surface tension of gas bubbles. This combination is widely used in India for symptomatic relief of hyperacidity and associated bloating.

💊 Dosage & Administration

Adult: 10-20 ml (2-4 teaspoonfuls) orally, 4 times a day, preferably 20-60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, or as needed. Maximum 80 ml/day.

Note: Shake the bottle well before use. Use the measuring cup/spoon provided. Can be taken with or without water. For optimal effect, take 20-60 minutes after meals and at bedtime. Do not take other oral medications within 1-2 hours of this antacid.

⚠️ Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to aluminum, magnesium salts, or simethicone
  • Severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min) due to risk of aluminum and magnesium toxicity

🔬 Mechanism of Action

Magaldrate neutralizes gastric hydrochloric acid, raising intragastric pH. It also adsorbs pepsin and bile salts, and stimulates prostaglandin synthesis and mucus secretion, offering mucosal protection. Simethicone is a surfactant that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the GI tract, causing them to coalesce. This allows for easier elimination via belching or flatus, relieving bloating and discomfort.

🤕 Side Effects

  • Chalky taste
  • Mild diarrhea (due to magnesium)
  • Mild constipation (due to aluminum)

🤰 Special Populations

Pregnancy: Category B (US FDA). Magaldrate and Simethicone are considered safe for occasional, short-term use during pregnancy as they are minimally absorbed. However, prolonged high-dose use of magaldrate should be avoided. Consult a physician.

Driving: No known effects. Safe.
